The holiday season is right around the corner and you know what that means…shopping. But all shopping is not created equal when it comes to sustainability. This year try supplementing some of the gifts (or all) on your list with thrifted items.
Philly and the surrounding suburbs are packed with consignment shops and thrift stores each with their own flair and personality. Whether you are looking for furniture, jewelry, clothing, or rare vintage finds you are covered. Even the pickiest person on your list is sure to be happy.
Thrifting or buying secondhand items is an easy alternative to fast fashion and likely more cost effective. Sadly, in the short-term fast fashion may seem more affordable, but the quality is so poor that whatever you purchase does not last long. It’s also much better for the environment- see why here.
As for some of my favorites, check out Bird in the Hand consignment shop in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. I actually found the gorgeous vintage Hermes scarf shown below- a rare find indeed.
Philly AIDS Thrift is a Philly landmark, multi-level store with everything from books to cookware and everything in between. Since 2005 the store has donated over $5,000,000 to funding programs focused on HIV prevention, outreach, case management, research, and education for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The Bryn Mawr Hospital Thrift has beautiful furniture pieces and a wide variety of glassware and jewelry along with clothing.
Another one of my favorites is Second Chances in Jenkintown, staffed by volunteers, filled with a wide variety of items, and the best part, the proceeds support The Women’s Center of Montgomery County.
